Remove Loose Surface Level Dirt
First, vacuum or dry mop the floor to get rid of any surface level dirt, hair and dust. This can be done minimally once every week. For households with high foot traffic, you may wish to increase the frequency of dry cleaning.
In addition to dry cleaning, any spillage should be quickly wiped up in order to prevent stains. However, if you do not manage to get to spills as soon as they happen, or dirt and grime is left to build up over time, this guide will cover how to tackle persistent stains further below.
Use a Cleaning Solution
After removing any dust and hair from the surface, you can use a commercial floor cleaner for a deeper clean and to eliminate germs. The mild abrasive action of most commercial grade floor cleaners are sufficient to get rid of dirt or grime that build up on your vinyl flooring. Nonetheless, it is recommended to read the manufacturer label to ensure that it is safe for use on your vinyl floor.
Tip: Avoid Harsh Cleaners
Any commercial cleaning products used should be as gentle and non-abrasive as possible on your vinyl floor. As such, avoid using scouring powders or products that contain ammonia. These products are too harsh and their abrasive action can damage your vinyl flooring. Also avoid using “Mop and Shine” products as these leave behind a residue that can attract more dirt to your vinyl floor.
In addition, ensure that you follow the guidelines stated on the label to ensure that you do not under dilute the floor cleaner. To avoid causing any non-reversible damage to your vinyl flooring, most mild soap detergents or a homemade floor cleaner will also suffice. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that makes it excellent for removing dirt and grime while being gentle enough to use on your vinyl floor. The acidic substance will also not leave behind any sticky residue or unsightly streak marks.
Ensure that you wring out any excess water before commencing mopping of your vinyl floor. For this purpose, you can opt for spin mops that get rid of any excess water quickly and easily.
Tackle Stubborn Stains
Most commercial floor cleaners are sufficient to get rid of dirt or grime that build up on your vinyl flooring. However, stubborn stains can form if you do not manage to get to spills as soon as they happen or grime is left to build up over time. In the case of persistent stains, do not fret. Fortunately, most instances of stubborn dirt can be easily removed with the right solution.
- Food Spills
A simple paste of baking soda and water can eliminate any floor discolouration or dried stains caused by food spills. Some common examples are spilled liquids such as juice or milk that have been left to dry over time. To remove such stains, make the above paste by combining the two ingredients in the ratio of two tablespoons of baking soda to one teaspoon of water. After applying the paste on the affected area, gently rub with a microfiber cloth to remove the stain.
- Paint, Ink or Grease
To tackle stains caused by paint, ink or grease, dampen a microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush with some rubbing alcohol and rub over the affected area. To avoid smearing and the affected area from getting larger, start from the outer edge of the affected area and work inwards. As you do this, periodically move to a cleaner area of the cloth to erase the stain.
- Scuff Marks
Keep a can of WD-40 on hand to eliminate any scuff marks caused by dragging of furniture or shoe marks. Apply on the affected area and buff with a microfibre cloth to remove.
Rinse the Floor if Necessary
In most cases, if your cleaning solution has been sufficiently diluted, rinsing after cleaning is not necessary. However, should your vinyl floor feel sticky to the touch, you can rinse your vinyl flooring after cleaning. A solution of distilled white vinegar and warm water will be sufficient to remove any residual soap scum that can leave a layer of film over your vinyl floor that attracts dirt.
Allow the Floor to Air Dry
Finally, allow your vinyl floor to air dry completely.
